Sydney fell for matcha hard and most of the city is still serving the sugary version. The rooms below are the ones the food press keeps naming when the question is quality. Picks lean on Broadsheet's reporting and Urban List's matcha guide.
TenTo, Surry Hills
The cafe Sydney food media most consistently names as the city's best matcha latte. Every drink arrives in a handmade ceramic cup crafted by the owners, and the drink inside earns the vessel.
Cafe Cre Asion
Sydney's first dedicated matcha cafe, open since 2011 and pouring years before the trend arrived. The latte is clean and balanced, and the hand-crafted matcha desserts (the Swiss rolls especially) are made with real care.
Mamuki, Glebe
The new one. Broadsheet's first look covers the signature matcha clouds and Japanese lunches from the team behind the original Enmore Road cafe. It opened quietly in February and did not stay quiet for long.
Chubby Cubby
One of very few Sydney cafes preparing ceremonial-grade matcha to order. A rotating seasonal menu keeps the regulars coming back for whatever is new.
Outta Coffee, Haymarket
Named among the best matcha in Sydney by more than one guide. Smooth and earthy, and a proper option when you are already in Chinatown eating everything else.
Piña, Potts Point
Some of Sydney's best matcha lattes, plus a matcha float with scoops of espresso ice cream that reads like a dare and drinks like a dessert.
Parami, CBD
The matcha latte holds its own, but the silky matcha and cream cheese purin is the reason to cross town.
