Asking where to get Chinese food in Sydney is the wrong question. The right question is which suburb, because each one specialises. This map comes from Time Out's Burwood coverage and Broadsheet's regional Chinese series.

Burwood

Time Out named Burwood one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025, and Chinese kitchens are the reason. Cheng's Xi'an Traditional Foods is their standing favourite for hand-ripped noodles. Wonder Skewers runs a loud and happy barbecue skewer operation on Burwood Road. Kowloon Cafe does Hong Kong diner food, and the crispy butter pineapple bun there is worth the trip on its own.

Haymarket

The old heart, still beating. Jiangnan Kitchen on Goulburn Street cooks the gentler, sweeter food of the Yangtze delta. Steam King on Thomas Street is the late-night stalwart. Haymarket rewards walking in hungry with no plan.

Chatswood

A third of Chatswood speaks Mandarin or Cantonese at home, and the food density shows it. Tasty Easting House built its menu as a best-of list from across China. The food courts here punch far above their rent.

Hurstville

The south's answer to Chatswood. Fun House runs hotpot rooms in both suburbs with a soup stock list that takes real deliberation. Bring a group and order wide.
